About Melanie: Melanie is a sculptor who specializes in the carving of stone. Following a foundation course in Art and Design at Jacob Kramer College, Leeds, Melanie studied for her BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art at Portsmouth University and later her MA in Fine Art (sculpture) at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has been a professional artist for more than 20 years.

Melanie’s sculpture is representational in style. She works from the human figure, but will use other imagery (sometimes animal imagery) to communicate what she wants to say about the human condition.

As an experienced stone carver, Melanie has completed many public commissions; these larger-than-life-size stone-carved sculptures are permanently sited in a number of locations in Yorkshire.
Melanie has also joined us on some of our shows and we are looking forward to seeing more of her works at some shows this year too.

‘Freeflow’

Explores the human psyche, the shell and fluid represent metaphors for the inner self.

‘Ascend’

Like 'Freeflow' this piece explores the psyche, our need to travel further beyond our emotional and intellectual experience.

‘The Minotaur’
50 cm x 30 cm x 27 cm
Alludes to our attempts to control and suppress our basic emotions, impulses and drives.

‘Take the Plunge’
91 cm x 23 cm x 30 cm
Literally ' taking the plunge' - the fluid the figure is diving into can be read as a metaphor for the unfamiliar or unknown


Stone Carving Workshops with Melanie
If you would like to learn how to carve stone, Melanie is offering a series of weekend Stone carving workshops from her studio in the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 2012

Stone Carving Weekend Course Dates:-

July 28th and 29th, 2012
October 6th and 7th, 2012

Melanie’s Studio is only 20 to 30 minutes drive away from : The Yorkshire Sculpture Park; The Hepworth, Wakefield; The Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; David Hockney at Salts Mill, Saltaire and Dean Clough, Halifax.

The stone is ideal for beginners but also very popular with those more experienced in the field. Southern Stone stock a range of sawn blocks. We have many standard block sizes and also supply in slab form (price negotiable depending on quantities). All sizes can be supplied on request. Sawn blocks cost approximately £35.00 per cubic foot. We also have a courier service that delivers nationwide, cost is between £50.00-£86.00 per pallet.
