Join professional sculptor Melanie Wilks for this two day workshop as she guides you through the process of creating a completely three dimensional stone carved sculpture.
Drawing inspiration from The Hepworth Family Gift, you will employ the same approach to creating stone sculpture as used by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and their contemporaries learning the Direct Stone-Carving technique.
The course will look at the concept 'Truth to Materials' that Hepworth employed in her work and you will learn to work with the stone intuitively, understanding each block of stone has its own unique characteristics to work with. With this in mind during the course you may produce drawings for your sculpture but these are guides to thinking rather than definitive models and you are free to change direction should the nature of the stone suggest it.
You will be provided with traditional Stone-Carving tools like mallets and chisels to carve your sculpture and a block of Limestone measuring approximately 250mm x 150mm x 150mm (an ideal size to achieve a finished carving within this intensive two day workshop). You are welcome to bring your own ideas and drawings with you for inspiration but these aren’t essential as there will lots of resources and inspiration within the gallery.
By the end of this masterclass you will have your own three dimensional stone carved to sculpture to take home, perfect for the home or garden.
The workshop is suitable for everyone, novices and more experienced carvers.
It is advised that you wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mend getting a bit dusty (aprons will be provided).
