Master stone sculptor Melanie Wilks will lead a two-day masterclass, creating unique limestone carvings for your home or garden inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s use of the direct stone carving method. This is a rare chance to explore the wonderful galleries of the Hepworth and the legacy of Barbara Hepworth through gaining first-hand, understanding of the sculptural processes Hepworth pursued using fine limestone and traditional handheld tools.
TO BOOK A PLACE ON THIS WORKSHOP CLICK HERE Drawing inspiration from The Hepworth Family Gift, you will employ the same approach to creating stone sculpture as used by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and their contemporaries through learning the Direct Stone-Carving technique. The course will look at the concept of 'Truth to Materials' that Hepworth employed in her work and you will learn to work with the stone intuitively, understanding each block of stone has its own unique characteristics to work with.
You will initiate a number of sketches and drawings considering sculptural forms and shapes. You are welcome to bring your own ideas and drawings with you for inspiration but these aren’t essential as there will lots of resources and inspiration within the gallery.
You will then work in the Calder, where you will be provided with traditional Stone-Carving tools like mallets and chisels, carving a block of Limestone measuring approximately 250mm x 150mm x 150mm (an ideal size to achieve a finished carving within this intensive two day masterclass). You will sand and refine your sculpture on the second day, ensuring it is completed within the two days. Limestone sculptures are durable and long-lasting, by the end of the masterclass you will have produced a sculpture which will have a place in your home for years to come.
It is advised that you wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mend getting a bit dusty (aprons will be provided).
